Handing Over Control

After recent issues, I (Sarah Maher) hand over complete control of the blog to Nathan Vose since I have not been kept in the loop, therefore I cannot update this blog further. I am not interested in researching, formatting and even camera work as I no longer feel welcome or part of the team. I hope my work isn't wasted and I still get fully credited. Good luck everyone involved!

POWER: Costume

Michael

An average man. Sensible and modern clothing.

Adam

Casual clothes, not ironed, a bit unkempt (from being slept in the night before).

Adam's regular outfit (what he wears when he finds the crater)

Evil!Adam is more sharply dressed. Reds and pinstripe. More fashion cautious. If you're gonna destroy the world, you may as well look good doing it!

Evil!Adam's attire, with matching pin stripe trousers.

Shaun

Shortish, nerdy glasses, baggy clothes.

POWER: Adam's Evil Cinematography

When Adam abuses his power, the camera angles and movements will change. Here are a few suggestions how to show that Adam's has turned evil through cinematography.

Camera Angles

Low camera angles (camera looking up at the subject) suggests power and that they are in charge. It can also be more sinister and suggest that they have power over whoever they are talking too, whereas the others would be portrayed with a high camera angle, to suggest hopelessness and entrapment.

On Your Left

Antagonists are often portrayed on the right hand side of posters or the frame as that's where we tend to look last on an image. Showing Adam on the left hand side of the frame can foreshadow and how his antagonistic nature.

A few examples of good vs. evil film posters. See a pattern?

Lighting

Lighting can drastically alter the mood of a scene and the shot. Low key lighting (less lights) is the best to portray antagonists as it suggests a darker nature and that they are hiding something. Adding gels to red heads (main and key lights) can also give depth and a bit of colour to the shot. Red and blue tend to be used for antagonists.

Blurred Lines

Adam requires POV shots, but usually antagonists do not (we normally have POV shots to align with someone. We don't usually want to align ourselves with the antagonist). The Truman Show includes some POV shots of antagonists but blur the edges so there's a bit of difference. Maybe we are made to align with Adam and we do want normal angles and POV's to suggest anyone can be tained by evil.

A few pointers that could be of use.

POWER: Script Notes

  • Scene 5: change the shutter speed so the camera motion blurs and makes it look trippy.
  • When Adam becomes the villain, 10fps (Emperor's New Clothes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qFF2v8VsaA
  • TRIPPY EDITS
  • I imagine Adam a bit like Nathan from Misfits. Loud, not scared to voice his opinion, etc.
  • What does the meteor look like? Could colour correct the film to have a colour tinge to match: foreshadowing.
  • Gritty and raw visuals. Make it look as human as possible.

POWER: Character Inspirations

Adam

Nathan Young - Misfits (2009-2011)

A born clown with an irritating, flippant attitude towards life and others, Nathan gained the power of Immortality after the Storm, which he discovered months after when he temporarily died facing against the brainwashed Virtue organisation. Like the rest of the misfits, Nathan's power reflects an aspect of his personality: his apparent imperviousness to hurtful comments manifests in immortality - he literally cannot die by any means.

"I can feel it in my balls" - Nathan

Chase Collins
The Covenant (2006, Harlin)

Chase Collins is the long-banished fifth son of the Sons of Ipswich. He is the descendant of Hagen Goodwin Pope, the bastard son of John Putnam and Agnes Goodwin Pope. He returned to the Ipswich colony and enrolled himself at Spenser Academy in order to manipulate Caleb Danvers into willing him his share of the Power. When his powers first manifested on his 13th birthday, he was scared and spent his teenage years in fear and confusion. However, as he began to use his abilities, he learned to control them and became addicted to its euphoric effects.

Chase appears to be happy-go-lucky when we first see him. He's charming and friendly, easily making friends. It's not until he confronts Caleb in Sarah's dorm that his true nature comes out. He feels no remorse for hurting or killing people, including his own family stating that "it just comes naturally to me". He actually takes great pleasure in using his power to make other people suffer. He feels like he's been wronged by not being a part of the Covenant and plans on making them pay. Chase possessed more power than that of an Ascended warlock. He was more powerful than any of the Sons of Ipswich alone. Unfortunately, Chase's increased power also increased the seduction and addiction of his powers, causing him to use them excessively and continue to slowly drain his health and age with each use.

"He's more powerful...than you can imagine."
 - Pogue Parry, after being attacked by Chase, informs Caleb Danvers.

Luke Cage
Jessica Jones (2015)

Luke Cage is a man with a secret past that came across private investigator Jessica Jones during the course of an investigation in New York City. Cage has extremely durable skin. He demonstrated it to Jones using a circular saw against his own stomach, and he survived both being stabbed in the neck and being shot with a shotgun. Rough, tough, strong man.

"You can't fix me. I'm unbreakable" - Luke Cage

POWER - Visual Inspirations

Muse - The 2nd Law: Unsustainable

Few ideas a minute into the video for the opening shot of broadcasts about the meteor shower.

Could also foreshadow the charater's powers? Could include overlaps like this for the title sequence.

Chronicle (Trank, 2012)

Whilst attending a party, three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

Similar story line. Some ideas how they find the crater. Banter similar to the script and they have fun! But they all seem to get along- they kind of love to hate each other in Power.

Maybe not handheld/suture feel like they use! We want high quality.

Misfits (2009-2013)

A group of young offenders doing community service get struck by lightning during a storm, and begin to develop superpowers.

Dark style, grim. Similar story ideas. Could shape shift and turn invisible in similar ways (as if it hurts?) Gritty and raw visuals! Make it look as human as possible!

I like this poster! We could do something similar?

Jessica Jones (2015-)

A former superhero decides to reboot her life by becoming a private investigator.

Grim style. Colour correction heavy! Could do something similar with the colour scheme of the meteors. Gritty and raw visuals! Make it look as human as possible!
